Neeraj Returns to Lausanne With Scores Left Unsettled

Neeraj Chopra has barely had time to unpack his Commonwealth Games silver before the next contest calls. On August 21, he will return at the Lausanne Diamond League, facing a field that feels more like a javelin final than a meet. Waiting for him are Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, world champion Keshorn Walcott, Anderson Peters and Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage, the man who beat Neeraj to gold in Glasgow with an 89.75m throw.

Neeraj’s best was 85.83m, a season’s best as he continues his comeback. The silver did not seem to bother him much; he was happy to see India’s flag on the podium. Lausanne offers another chance to test himself again before September’s Asian Games and perhaps settle unfinished scores. Read more

“Financially, it was Tough To Play Judo” - Golden Girl Ashmita Dey

Asmita Dey’s Commonwealth Games gold looks glorious. The road behind it was anything but.

The 23-year-old judoka from Tripura became India’s first CWG judo champion after winning the women’s 48kg event in Glasgow. But to prepare for the moment, she borrowed money for camps in Germany and France, including a ₹5 lakh loan before the Games.

Her father, a cycle mechanic and her biggest supporter, died last year. Asmita now sends part of her ₹40,000 police salary home, while managing training costs and family responsibilities.

Judo is currently outside India’s TOPS funding programme, leaving athletes like her without support. Her medal is historic, but the loans behind it raise a question: why must champions struggle alone before India celebrates them? Read more

“I am the youngest of three siblings. It was difficult for my father to run a family of five, but he was always there as my support. Financially, it was tough to continue in judo. I don’t know how I managed,”
